Why does my baby crying with me but calm down with others?

How many times has it happened that your baby starts crying — endlessly —and you try to calm him once, twice, three times, but he doesn’t settle down? Then your husband or mother comes, and suddenly the miracle happens — he calms down instantly. I know exactly how you feel in that moment, how you’re overwhelmed with a sense of despair ,self-doubt, and feel like you’re not good enough for your child.
Before we dive into why this happens, I want to reassure you this is extremely common. I can almost guarantee that nearly every mother has experienced it at some point. It doesn’t mean your baby doesn’t love you or doesn’t want you close, It simply means you are their safe space, the one place where they can fully express themselves, even through tears.
1-Why Does This Happen?
1-1 Babies are sensitive to their surroundings
Especially to the people closest to them — the parents. So if the mother or father is emotionally or physically exhausted, your body will unconsciously transmit your tension to your baby, which will increase their crying. But when they are held by someone else who is calm at that moment like a grandparent or partner, a different energy is transferred to the baby, and as a result, they calm down.
1-2 Your scent and voice
A baby recognizes their mother’s scent and their father’s voice from birth. Sometimes, if the baby cries for a long time in your arms, they may become irritated — but when someone else holds them, the change in scent can distract them. This shift may help them calm down or even forget what they were feeling.

1-3 Coincidence
Sometimes, a baby calming down when held by someone else is simply a coincidence. You may have already done everything right, and the baby was just about to stop crying anyway — regardless of who picked them up.
1-4 A different position
Maybe what your baby needs to calm down is simply a change in position. You might have noticed that you were trying to soothe them while sitting, then someone else comes along, starts walking around with them, or places them on their tummy and just like that, the crying stops.
2- How do you deal with this situation?

1- Don’t hesitate to hand your baby to someone else and take a break — without feeling like you’re not a good mother. You don’t have to prove to yourself or to anyone else that you’re the best mom for your child. You already are.
2- If you’re alone, try changing your position — if you’re sitting, stand up, or place your baby on their tummy. You can also try changing the environment or movement: walk around the house, or move to a quieter room. Sometimes, all your baby needs is a small shift.
In the end, I want you to always remember: your baby crying in your arms doesn’t mean they’re rejecting you. It means they’re expressing their feelings in the safest place they know — with you. No matter how often it happens, don’t lose confidence in your motherhood, especially if you’re a first-time mom.
You are not alone ❤️.
